This interactive timeline offers a visual representation of a century of the Western political economy of food since 1926. It maps developments across corporate concentration, science and technology, politics, law, trade and globalisation, and intellectual history and ideas.
Developments in the food system don’t happen in isolation. Decisions made decades ago continue to shape the institutions, businesses, technologies and dependencies we see today. The timeline aims to illustrate some of these connections, and how developments in one area can affect others.
This ‘metro map’ is a snapshot, not a comprehensive history. It reflects my own interests in the relationships between business, science, technology and the state, and is inevitably selective. It is intended as a starting point for exploring the history and connections of the modern food system.
This is a proof of concept, and I welcome feedback. What is missing? What connections are worth exploring further? Where could the project go from here? Contact me at hello@antonyso.online with your thoughts and ideas.
This project was developed using Google Gemini Notebook.
